Dominica: Immigration Guide

Dominica also referred to as the “natural island” of the Caribbean, is a paradise for people who love the outdoors and the natural world. Yes, it is a tropical island, but not the kind with endless coastlines and white-sand beaches.

The nation is surrounded by mountains, luxuriant jungles, rivers, volcanoes, waterfalls, and the largest hot spring in the world. Dominica’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, although the island is quickly becoming a significant financial hub in the Caribbean, with job opportunities in growing sectors including offshore banking and other corporate activities.

As English is the official language of the nation, many people find doing business to be straightforward. The volcanic island does produce a broad range of fruits and vegetables that are sold at local markets, although much of the island’s food must be imported.

There are a few considerations to make when establishing or conducting business in Dominica. Humor is a crucial component of communication because Dominicans cherish honesty and may be rather direct. While meetings should always begin on time, don’t count on others to do the same. Always adhere to the formal protocol, which is very strict, when dealing with Dominicans.

Jobs or Business

It’s difficult to get a work visa because you can only work for a local business if you have a specialization to fill. Therefore, the majority of ex-pats who relocate to the island launch their businesses or work online.

The work visa application must be submitted along with a one-year contract with a local company and the results of a medical exam. A return ticket to their home nation is also required, otherwise, applicants must submit a deposit that could cover transportation costs.

To work in Dominica, non-citizens must possess a work permit, which has a one-year expiration date but may be extended.

Different Visa Types

Visa for tourists: Depending on your nationality and the length of your stay, a visa for tourists may not be necessary.

Only those with a job offer are eligible for a working visa. As long as your employment contract is for a minimum of six months, it will let you remain on the island.

Temporary Residency: This visa is for people who desire to reside in Dominica temporarily but not permanently. Each year, it needs to be renewed.

Investment-Based Citizenship

Visa: If you make a single donation of at least USD 100,000 to the Dominica Government Fund, you are eligible to petition for citizenship. There are four categories, each with a different contribution amount based on the number of dependents mentioned on the application:

For a single candidate, a $100,000 non-refundable contribution is needed.

The main candidate and spouse are needed to provide a non-refundable contribution of USD 175,000.

For the primary applicant and up to three qualifying dependents, a non-refundable contribution of USD 200,000 is needed.

For each additional qualified dependent that is not a spouse, a non-refundable contribution of USD 25,000 is needed.

If you invest above USD 200,000 in particular real estate projects, you may also apply for citizenship. In addition to the aforementioned investment conditions, there may also be processing, due diligence, and government costs to be paid, depending on the investment choice selected.

Dominica’s residency visa requirements

A request for an extension of stay must be made to the Immigration Department and documented in the passport. The applicant’s status remains that of a visitor, necessitating an Extension of Stay unless their immigration status changes to Work or Residence Permit. The applicant will remain on the island illegally if they don’t request an Extension of Stay, and they won’t receive a Dominica visa application form until their visitor status is changed. The candidate must finish a medical form and a checklist to see if they are qualifie

The form should be filed with the passport extension of stay at the conclusion. A physician should complete the medical form after examining the applicant. Chest x-rays and HIV tests must be performed, and the results must be recorded on the medical records. All required supporting documentation must be submitted with the application; otherwise, it will be declined.
